How to ... Use Google Maps

What is the GPS information for your flying site?

The Latitude and Longitude of your flying site will identify the exact location of your field. For the United States the Latitude (North-South) will be a positive number between 40 and 20, next followed by usually 6 decimal places. for example Pinkham Field - Durham, CT has Latitude = 41.474875. The Longitude (East-West) for the US is a negative number between -70 and -120, next followed by usually 6 decimal places. for example Pinkham Field - Durham, CT has Longitude = -72.686822.

Your flying site GPS information will be included on the FAC calendar. Anyone can click on it and open a Google Map of your flying site.

About a month before your contest GHQ will lookup all members who are within a radius of your flying site. They will be emailed your contest information with a iCal Calendar Event ready to add to their own calendar and personal directions from their house to your contest flying site.

How do I get the GPS information for my flying site?

The basic steps are:

1) Go to Google and search for your flying site or something near it. Select MAPS.

2) Find your flying site and click on the map to place a pin. This pin should be at the exact location of where you meet on the field. Google will give directions to this exact pin location. You may need to zoom the map to place your pin correctly.

3) Right-Click on the pin to bring up a menu - select: What's Here

4) A window will appear showing the Latitude and Longitude of that pin.

Enter the GPS information in the form.

Type the Latitude and Longitude for that pin into the Add Contest form. These GPS coordinates will be confirmed by GHQ. Once we have the best pin location, these coordinates will be saved, ready to use the next time.
